A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR FAMILIES

Choosing an old age home
in Port Elizabeth.

Finding care is about a person, a family and a daily way of life. These are the conversations we encourage when you compare old age homes in Port Elizabeth, also known as Gqeberha.

Start with the care your loved one needs.

A beautiful room is only part of the decision. Explain the help your loved one needs with everyday routines, personal care and mobility, and ask how the home would support them. Discuss any specific nursing requirements privately with the team.

At El Shaddai, we discuss needs, accommodation and care suitability before admission. Assisted living offers help with everyday routines in a homelike setting. Frail care involves more hands-on daily support. The arrangement must match the individual; availability alone is not enough.

Visit the home. Meet the people.

A viewing gives you a feel for the spaces your loved one will use: the lounge, dining area, outdoor seating and available accommodation. Notice how the team interacts with residents, and ask who takes responsibility for day-to-day concerns.

Our family-run El Shaddai community operates three homes and supports 60 residents across those homes. This website introduces El Shaddai at 41 Colin Street in Kabega Park. Ask our team which home and room options are suitable and available for your family.

Understand the support behind the care.

Our caregivers assist residents with their daily needs. Facility Manager Charlene Kilian and the team help families understand the practical care arrangements. Sister van Eeden carries out rounds, supporting early identification of concerns and appropriate follow-up.

Ongoing learning matters to us. Our 16 September 2026 training session covered falls prevention, vital signs, emergency response and first aid, safe positioning and handling, medication awareness and infection prevention. Ask us about the support your loved one would need and any additional arrangements required.

Compare the full quotation.

Ask every home for the inclusions, exclusions and care arrangements in writing. A monthly figure is easier to compare when you understand what it covers and what your family must arrange separately.

How fees work at El Shaddai

Our monthly accommodation fees are all-inclusive, excluding adult incontinence products, toiletries and medication. The final quotation follows a needs assessment and consideration of the accommodation required. Current room availability is confirmed when you enquire.

Six questions to take to a viewing.

  1. Who will help with daily care, and who can our family speak to about concerns?
  2. How are the resident’s care needs assessed before admission and reviewed afterwards?
  3. What nursing support is available, and how are external appointments or extra support arranged?
  4. Which room options are currently available, and what personal belongings can we bring?
  5. What does the monthly quotation include, and which items or services cost extra?
  6. How are meals, personal routines, activities and family visits arranged?

Arranging care from overseas?

You can begin with a direct family conversation. Tell us your time zone when you speak to the team, explain what your family is looking for and ask about involving a relative locally for a viewing. Discuss communication arrangements, care suitability and the full quotation before making plans.
